Case study – Tidyco helps Local Authority secure their SBEM certificate

The customer

This Tidyco Climate customer is a Local Authority, which had recently had a depot built, where refuse collection vehicles are taken to be repaired. This particular structure, which needed heating, had been in planning for two years. The building being discussed has a  surface area of approximately 720 m2 (7750 ft2) – we estimate that to be a volume of 7,200 m3 (254,266 ft3).

The requirements

In order to obtain the necessary Simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM) certificate, Tidyco provided a plan to install a number of gas-burning units, which would heat the building. Tidyco had been involved at the planning stage with the developer and had a carried out heat loss calculations and proposed the relevant heating requirements. As is often the case with building projects, it was subject to delays.

The client chose Tidyco, as we are preferred supplier for their climate requirements.

The solution

At the time the plans were submitted, an SBEM certificate was granted, however due to delays and time elapsed, the certificate was no longer valid. Owing to the current climate and geopolitical situation changing significantly, the parameters of acquiring an SBEM certificate had changed. Consequently, this now meant gas was heavily disparaged whereas using electric was now the favoured form of producing heat – due to it being able to be produced in sustainably.

Tidyco went back to the drawing board and revised the plan, this time substituting glass-powered units with electric heat pumps. Heat pumps are an ultra-efficient means of producing heat as they can be 300% efficient, unlike a gas boiler, which could never achieve 100% due to a certain amount of heat loss. As a result of installing heat pumps, it meant that installing costly solar panels wasn’t needed, as this was considered when reapplying for the SBEM.

In order to obtain an SBEM certificate, you must earn points by factoring in a number of energy efficiencies, such as building insulation, air permeability, use and application of technology, as well as lighting and heating. An SBEM report also looks at how energy is produced. For example, electricity can be produced from renewable sources – such as solar or wind, which will earn you more points.

In the end, Tidyco installed two 25kW Samsung heat pumps along with three energy saving destratification fans which are all thermostatically controlled – meaning they come on when the sensor detects a drop in temperature and turn off again when the target temperature has been achieved.
